to bring you back in and bring in our chief congressional correspondent dana bash so we can have this whole conversation as we're watching and awaiting the secretary of state there to testify before the house foreign affairs committee. and, dana bash, do we have you seated? >> i am, hi, brooke. >> nice to see you. as we await what will possibly be a little bit more fiery, right, questioning from members of the house as opposed to what we saw with the senate foreign relations committee earlier this morning, first, just give me a little bit of a preview, what are you hearing, what are you expecting to come from this, this afternoon? >> reporter: we're probably going to hear very similar lines of questioning that we heard, especially from republicans in this senate. it got maybe a little bit more fiery, a little more intense in the senate than we would have anticipated. we do anticipate that kind of atmosphere in the house, which is kind of the way the house tends to be, the house is run by republicans. and even the house republican chair anticipated it to be that kind of atmosphere because i
tapper has been watching this with me. dana bash is on capitol hill. this is vintage hillary clinton. she responded to the direct accusations, the challenges but the republicans especially -- and we'll get to this shortly -- john mccain and rand paul were tough on her. they were not backing down. >> that's right. republicans were focused on, one, the administration specifically the united nations ambassador susan rice initially in the sunday show appearances, on all five sunday shows that sunday but also an initial discussion about what happened in benghazi, the word was that this was not a terrorist attack, this was a spontaneous protest because of the anti-islam video which of course turns out not to have been the case and a lot senators were focused on why were these talking points false. johnson said dr. rice was purposefully misleading the american public. dr. rice said she was not, she was using the talking points used by the intelligence committee and no effort to mislead. she was providing as much information as she knew at the time. the other information by senator rand paul talk
in that dead aassault on the embassy in benghazi. dana bash is our chief congressional correspondent with us as well. wolf, i'll start with you, give us a sense of what you think the tone will be. connie mack saying he thinks she has a ton of respect and no one will be playing gotcha. >> i think it will be respectful, it's only supposed to go on for 90 minutes starting at the top of the hour, and later this afternoon, 90 minutes, so it will be limited in time, she's highly respected, and she's coming after a very serious illness, a concussion followed by a blood clot in her head. she's wrapping up her tenure. so there are serious question that's will be reviewed. >> she's done that before, right? >> she'll do it again today. >> so to some degree, because she has done it before, what else do you think they need to or want to hear from her? >> she didn't herself testify before that accountability review board. they're going to want to hear her side of the story. where was she, why didn't she go on the sunday talk shows, why did she delegate susan rice who has no responsibility for d diplomatic
was using performance enhancing drugs of some kind. >> i talked to author dana coyle who had written a book, one of the things he said about tyler hamilton in getting tyler to talk about his own doping. someone who has lied for so long, can't tell the full truth. it comes out in drips and drabs. he felt this is what we were witnessing with lance armstrong. it wasn't smart to give such a big interview as the first because the truth -- he's not able to tell the full truth because he's still saying he's a bully but he wasn't saying he was directly pressuring anybody on his team. >> he had to be careful because he still has some liability legal and civil liability, and he was probably coached not to put too much out there that might be thrown back in his face in a court of law. he's already lost tens of millions of dollars in endorsements and potential earnings. and the other aspect of this is there are going to be some people who are skeptical even if he's largely telling the truth now. they're going to say he's only taking this course when every other avenue is closed off, when he has no plau
many crisis. we have a number of new members on the house committee, and they have been warned, as dana barb reported this morning, noted they had to be told by the chairman of the house committee to be respectful. he was concerned, perhaps, that some of them were going to try to make a names for themselves perhaps inappropriately. >> and the secretary is now being seated. you see the photographers there. dana bash is on capitol hill, walk us through it, the senator from new jersey will open, and then what happens. >> that's right, he will have a statement, and then the ranking republican will as well, and then we will hear from secretary clinton. generally these hearings go on and on. and bob menendez is starting now. >> let's listen. >> since the full senate has not passed the committee resolution officially seating members, i want to ask unanimous consent of members to participate in today's hering. if there is no objection, so ordered. madame secretary, let me welcome you and thank you for honoring your commitment to come before the committee after the administrative review board's
